Beheading was the most common form of excecution in medieval Britain, however Halifax was unusual - it was home to one of the only guillotine-style devices in the country, known as the Gibbet. Beheadings here also went on until the mid-17th century, even for petty crime. A replica device still stands on Gibbet Street, the exact site of the original device!
